INTRODUCING PPGAS

The Museu Nacional's Graduate Program in Social Anthropology (PPGAS) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro was the first graduate course in social anthropology in the country. Conceived with the aim of organically combining teaching and research, it has occupied, since its creation in 1968, an unrivalled position of leadership in the field of Brazilian anthropology, and is now fulfilling an increasingly distinguished role in the international scientific community.
The excellence of PPGAS has been assured by the support of organisations such as the Ford Foundation, decisive in its initiation and consolidation, FINEP, which since 1973 has been the principal funding source for research realised in the institution, CNPq, and CAPES. Recognising the high performance of PPGAS, CAPES has awarded it, from the beginning, the maximum grade in its evaluation of graduate courses.
The PPGAS Master's course has been running since 1968; the doctoral course, since 1977. As of today, more than 260 Master's theses and 90 doctoral dissertations have been presented (and more than 80 have been already published as books). The quality of these works has been translated into a large number of publications as well as prizes obtained in several competitions.
PPGAS has maintained regular liaison with some of the principal national and international centres of teaching and research in the social sciences, through formal links, combined research and exchange programmes -- including the exchange of visiting lecturers, the realisation of post-doctoral work and the allocation of grants for research or additional training outside the country.
PPGAS has one of the best libraries specialising in the area, containing more than 30,000 works and about 200 periodicals. Promotion of the work of staff and students has always been one of the institution's priorities. Beyond supporting the publication of articles within and outside the country, PPGAS edits the journal Mana. Estudos de Antropologia Social, a channel for the release of original research and the stimulation of scientific debate.
Graduates of PPGAS have distinguished themselves in filling academic posts in teaching institutions in Brazil and in other countries, in the running of research agencies, in a wide variety of cultural activities, and in answering the needs of various governmental and non-governmental organisations.

STRUCTURE OF GRADUATE STUDIES

PPGAS graduate studies structure, adopted in 1998, is based on a unified conception of graduate courses: the M.S. course is seen as the first step towards the obtaining of the doctorate.

M.S. course

The student must obtain 24 credits (corresponding to eight courses) and defend the Master's thesis within a maximum period of 36 months, starting from the date of admission. The thesis examination is made by a examining board of three academics, one of them being the supervisor. This examination, besides granting the Master's degree, may provide admission onto the Ph.D. course, under certain conditions.

Ph.D. course

The student must obtain 48 credits; up to 50% of which may correspond to credits obtained during the M.S. course. To obtain the remaining credits, the student must attend at least four regular courses, and engage in research activities. The Ph.D. course emphasizes original research and should lead to the production of a dissertation making substantial contributions to the discipline. The Ph.D. course includes a qualifying examination, in two phases: a) an evaluation of the research project and a written theoretical exam, at the end of the fourth semester; b) an examination of the thesis plan, in the seventh semester. In the examination's first phase, a committee including the supervisor and two other academics of PPGAS is designated to follow the student's activities and evaluate his/hers performance. The dissertation must be defended within a period of 48 months, starting from the date of admission onto the Ph.D. course. The dissertation is examined by a board of five academics, including the supervisor.

Post-doctoral Activities

Post-doctoral activities are open to candidates with the degree of Doctor who have had a specific work plan approved by the Coordination Committee. These activities have a minimal duration of one year, and a maximal duration of two years.

SCHOLARSHIPS (AND OTHER FUNDING FOR STUDENTS)

PPGAS has been seeking to guarantee scholarships for all Master's and doctoral students, through the institutional scholarship quotas allocated anually by CAPES and CNPq. Foreign students can also apply, via Brazilian embassies and consulates, for special scholarships awarded by the PEC-PG/CAPES Program. However, approval in the selection exam does not automatically imply attainment of the scholarship, since students must fulfill the criteria of funding agencies and those established by PPGAS.

JOURNAL

Mana. Estudos de Antropologia Social is edited by the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology and the publishers ContraCapa Livraria. The journal is dedicated to the presentation and discussion of research projects and articles which promote the study of socio-cultural phenomena and the development of anthropological knowledge. It also addresses current themes and debates in anthropological research. The journal publishes works in all fields related to social anthropology in its broadest sense. It is being financed with PPGAS' own funds (through the FINEP Link) and by José Bonifácio Foundation (UFRJ).
